OpenVPN - One Simple & Unified Client Configuration

If you have deployed a new OpenVPN client our last update, you will have noticed that you probably did it much faster than last time. Gone are the fragile ZIP container which holds a number of files of which you never remembered which one does which?

How do I import this on this client on Windows?

Didn't NetworkManager require some changes first?

Remember juggling separate .pem, .key, and .ovpn files, double-checking paths, and hoping every client had the right cipher? That’s now history.

IPFire is now generating a single, unified client configuration files which contains every piece of information the client needs to know: What kind of VPN are we creating? How to reach the server? Which is my key? All further configuration will now be pushed from the server which allows us to change our mind on which encryption to use, or whether we need more routes pushed to make more of the local network reachable for the remote client.

The result? Deployments are faster, updates are painless, and your VPN stays secure without chasing down every client. All clients that we have tested are able to import this configuration file with a simple click.

Think you’ll ever miss the good old days of the ZIP files? I didn’t think so.
